I had a crash with my hard drive and want to know if I will have any problems
reinstalling XP Home on another hard drive. I have previously upgraded from
98SE and have all the disks and activation codes. Will there be a problem
with microsoft and the activation?
No, none at all. If you have an upgrade CD, it's retail, and you can
even transfer a retail copy to another computer entirely.
If it's been at least 120 days since last activation, it should work
over the internet, just as it did the last time. If fewer than 120
days, you'll be prompted to activate by voice call to an 800 number,
but that's almost as quick and easy.
Note that you don't have to install 98 first. The requirement to use
an upgrade version is to *own* a previous qualifying version's
installation CD (with an OEM restore CD, see below), not to have it
installed. When setup doesn't find a previous qualifying version
installed, it will prompt you to insert its CD as proof of ownership.
Just insert the previous version's CD, and follow the prompts.
Everything proceeds quite normally and quite legitimately.
