Hard disk problems

Hi! Running Gateway 500 XL 30 Ghz Pentium, XP MCE 2004 , 512 Mb RAM, w/ 2
separate hard disks: 160 Gb Maxtor and a 100 Gb Maxtor. My primary drive,
C:\, is the 160 Gb. My secondary drive, D:\, is the 100 Gb.

I have a disk error on D: drive. I've attempted following the SOP for
repairing the disk using Check Disk via Control Panel/Windows. Upon restart,
when the system is performing Check Disk, it hangs on Stage 5 when it's
verifying the free space on the disk. I made sure that the disk remains
powered and have tried giving it as long as seemed necessary to finish, but
never does.

How do I repair the error on this disk? Why does Check Disk hang up when
it's trying to fix the disk? What to do?

Any help appreciated.

Hard drive manufacturers provide diagnostic software on their web sites. Go
to Maxtor's and download whatever thay have.
