HArd disk once per second

On my new computer that I've had about a month, there is HD activity
about once per second, every second. Any idea of what this is and how
to stop it (if it is safe to stop it).

This one has Windows XP Media Center 2005. My previous computer had
XP home SP1, upgraded to SP 2.

Probably polling the optical drives for change of
media (autorun). You can turn this off with a Registry
change of the Power Toys.

Open Task Manager and see what is running. You may need to do clean-boot

I turned off indexing that drive, and it quit. I'd like to have it
indexed, but the sound was bothering me.

Well, it stopped for a while, but it is doing it again, and indexing
is off.

I thought about using the task manager to see what is doing it. Two
processes are doing it:
lsass.exe
iexplore.exe

Does this help find the cause?
