Hard disk error not detected by windows?

J

Jerry Khann

Hello,

I have a trouble with my hard disk c:

1- when i run Acronis TrueImage it tell me 10 times that
it can't read a sector, and I have to "Ignore", other choice
"Retry" doesn't work, and "Abandon" is not good.

2- So just after, I tried "Properties"+"Tools"+"Check Now" and
it doesn't find any errors!

3- So just after, I tried in a "cmd window" "chkdsk c: /f/r"
it works for long time until the 4th pass, and after 61%
it was blocked and after few minutes I had a "blue screen"
with "system error ...."

4- So just after I restart my computer and on windows I retried
"Properties"+"Tools"+"Check Now" and it doesn't find any errors!
And the computer works very good, except TrueImage.

So now are my questions:
A- Do you think that there is a real trouble with the disk or not?

B- Do you think that the clone done with 10 times "Ignore" will work
when I would like restore it?

C- Do you know a good tool to really detect and repare disk sector
errors?

Thanx in advance.

Yes. 1 shows that its got bad sectors.
Post the Everest SMART report for the drive.

B- Do you think that the clone done with 10 times "Ignore" will work when I would like restore it?

Probably not, because those ignored sectors are likely in something that matters.

May not be tho, they could be in stuff you dont care about.
C- Do you know a good tool to really detect and repare disk sector errors?

Detection is best done with the drive's SMART capability, using Everest to report that data.

With that many bad sectors, there isnt much that can be done to repair them without loss of data.

Once you have got all the data off the drive you can, the hard drive manufacturer's diagnostic may
well be able to replace the bad sectors with good ones, but that will lose the data in those sectors.

With 10 bad sectors, you usually find that you keep getting more unless the problem
is just the drive temperature is much too high and you fix the temperature problem.
Not very likely in your winter tho, usually thats seen in the summer, not the winter.

You could see what the free (unregistered) version of Hard Disk Sentinel

Than you for this url.

I had tried with HardDisk Sentinel wich tell me that
I "have 9 sectors non reliable wich will be realocated without actions".

It is doing a deep scan wich will force realocation of the bad sectors.

I will tell you the result tomorow because it's very long!

See you

Yep, its perfect.
It doesn't tell anything about sector errors.

Yes it does, see my embedded comment.
I had tried with HardDisk Sentinel, like other contributor "Ed Light"
wrote it, and HD Sentinel tell me that I "have 9 sectors non reliable wich will be realocated without actions".

Thats saying the same thing as the SMART report, in different words.
I prefer lose data now than have a system crash in the futur. No?

Doing that now doesnt eliminate the possibility of a future crash.

Particularly with that many bad sectors.
The temperature seam normal: 41°C to 45°C.

Yes. And thats the highest it ever got to too.
It's a portable computer.
;-) Yes, but my house is warm! Upstairs, we have 21°C .

We've just had 10 days over 40C, tho it isnt that hot inside the house.
What do you think about?

That temperature of yours is fine.

Likely the drive is dying tho with that many bad sectors. Likely the number will increase over time.

With a laptop, its possible its not the drive but the power supply, but its more likely the drive.

Is these report OK for you? It doesn't tell anything about sector errors.

It does. The "Pending Sectors" are bad sectors that have not
yet been reallocated because their contents could not be read.
They will be realocated on a write to them.
I had tried with HardDisk Sentinel, like other contributor "Ed
Light" wrote it, and HD Sentinel tell me that I "have 9 sectors non
reliable wich will be realocated without actions".
I prefer lose data now than have a system crash in the futur. No?

Indeed. I think 9 bad sectors may or may not indicate a problem.
Run a long self-test once a week or so for a month, if no additional
bad sectors show up, the drive should be fine.
The temperature seam normal: 41°C to 45°C. It's a portable computer.

Looks fine, but only if you are not going to use it in a much warmer
environment. At about 55C it gets dicey.
;-) Yes, but my house is warm! Upstairs, we have 21°C .

Check temerature again in the summer ;-)
