Hangs all the time for around 30 seconds? Really Annoying!

Hello

I am running a domain and recently received a copy of Windows Vista x64
which I put on but sometimes it works well but other times, for no apparent
reason, the system will just hang for around 30 seconds (this affects all
applications) and clicking again for things just causes the application to
fade out more and more and (not responding comes up in the titlebar). After
waiting, everything returns to normal but then a few minutes later it
happens again.
Restarting normally sorts it out, but I would like a more permanent
solution.

This is extremly frustrating when trying to work on the pc and did not
happen with xp and does not happen with any other non-vista pcs.

Can someone please give me a solution to this problem otherwise I will have
to give up on Vista. The computer is very new with an AMD dual core
processor and 2gigs of ram which should even be enough to run Vista on
without such poor performace I would have thought!

Thanks
Robin

P.S. I tried uninstalling the anti virus program but it made no difference.

Something that is running is intermittently using too much CPU time. Look in
Help and Support for details on how to use the Task Manager. On the
Processes tab click on Show all processes then sort by the CPU column so
that the higher numbers are at the top. When the problem occurs you should
see one process (not System idle) using most of the CPU time.

There are no processes taking up the cpu or memory.
I am a domain admin but cannot find out what is causing this strange
behaviour.
It was the same after a fresh install.

Does not seem to matter which applications are open either. Even just
something like pasting text from the clipboard can cause it to hang when
other times it pastes in miliseconds.

Just finding it really hard to get any work done and what to find out why.
I'm thinking it might be some kind of network issue althoguh none of the
non-vista machines are experiencing any issues.

Thanks
Robin

Try using Process Explorer and Process Monitor.

Thanks for the help but ProcessExplorer Hangs as well along with
everything else.
The rest of the time, system idle process is taking up around 90% of
the cpu and other things just taking up little bits which is normal.

Could the hangs be caused by a network problem as the computer uses
roaming profiles?

Thanks
Robin

If Process Explorer hangs as well then I would suspect a driver or bad
hardware. If it's a driver keep a close eye on Interrupts in Process
Explorer. The only other thing I can think of is a root kit. You could also
look under Problem reports and solutions in Performance information and
tools to see if Windows knows of any problems. You can sometimes find clues
for which driver may be causing a problem.
