Hanging at Welcome screen

I have XP Pro + SP2

The m/c just hangs at the Welcome screen and I have to restart until it
opens correctly.

I have no passwords in use, am the only user and have not added progs.

You haven't really provided much information. See this link for the

In the meantime, here's a guess - If continually restarting the computer
eventually gets you into Windows, then this is the classic symptom of a
failing power supply. The power supply doesn't have enough "juice" to
get the hard drive spinning all the way. On subsequent restarts, the
drive's momentum is enough to finally get into Windows. Test by swapping
out the power supply with a known-working one. If that solves the issue,
replace the failing psu.

When it hangs, are you still able to move the mouse
cursor around?

If so, try using the Classic Login screen as described here:

My system is password protected, and would stop (NOT freeze,
I could still see it on the network) about every third time I turned
it on. Getting rid of the Welcome screen fixed it. Turning off
Welcome also disables the Fast User Switching service which
may have been the problem - I haven't tried just disabling the service
to see if that's what it was.

Even though you aren't using passwords, give it a try if it's an option
available in the User Accounts applet. You can easily go back if it
doesn't help.

What happens if you assign a password? What if you use a different account
and set that to auto login?
