Half Life 2 - What's going on

The HL2 Source-code has been leaked to the internet. Valve now rewrites
Why would they rewrite just because the source code was leaked? What
difference could it make?

It wasn't leaked, it was actually stolen by hackers pulling of a deliberate
attempt to get the game.

If they kept the same code instead of re-writing it, it would be a cheaters
dream. Games like counterstrike have cheats like aimbots and
'seeing-thru-walls' but is somewhat limited because they are adding pieces
of software to the games encypted code but they dont have the actual code
itself.
If they did have the source code, there would literally be no limit to what
the cheaters could do to ruin the fun of the legit players on multiplayer
servers. They could do anything from simple aimbots that never miss, up to
more imaginative things like changing the bullet damage of their own weapon
to 100%, or the weapon radious.. such as a grenade blast radius is now the
entire map instead of what would be a few metres or super jumping, or they
never die. When you got the source code, a programmer can change it to do
whatever (s)he wants it to do. Therefore they basically need to re-write it
all over again ( as to make the current stolen code useless to the new
release) which is very time consuming , hence such a delay

Part of the problem with games and release dates is the increased quality of
graphics.

In the 'good ol days' with something like a commodore 64, a game was created
in a few weeks , maybe a few months, with a good team , My friend made a
few that only took a couple of days. You had cheesy sound and graphic but
then it was still fun enough.

Now it take years to get the games that people want to play due to the
intense indepth game play and graphics... and 90% of the time before they
finish, the technology has changed so they need to decide on finishing their
product or implenting the new stuff because they dont want the developers
down the street beating them out cause they started their new game with the
new stuff

I guess that's the difference between the multiplayer oriented
First Person Shooter and the single player oriented First Person
Sneaker, like Thief. One of the great things about the Thief series
is the abundance of "Fan Missions", some of which actually modify
the engine. (or that seems to be the claim) In any case, many of
these missions are as good and in some cases better than those
that came with the game. So it's not always bad to have an ability
to modify a game, cheating aside.

Dungeon Siege was made with some open sources for being able to mod and
customize game play. .. Look how bad that game bombed.

After a month of it being out, public multiplayer servers were practically
untouched by legit players cause they were full of pricks that had created
cheap weapon mods that kill other legit players in 1 shot.

If i can recall correctly, having a legit weapon do 400 - 500 damage was a
good accomplishment of a well, leveld up player...Then on a multiplayer
server with cheating cocks, they were seeing who had the highest power
cheat.. All of them had above 5000 rating. One guy had found a loophole that
had his in the hundred thousand range

And Of Course, removing the other six lines of

Almost...

Quake3 was moddable.

Quake3 was huge.

Don't let the inefficiencies of multiplayer servers of one particular game
to regulate mods, make you believe that mods are bad.

Total conversion mods are often better than the original game.
