hal.dll not found or corrupt error message

My compaq presario laptop ran an automatic update for windows and I just
clicked install now. After it attempted to reboot I only receive this error
message and nothing will load. Anyone know how to fix this? I do not have
my CD's because I am in transition from Germany back to the US.
HELLLLLP!!!!!!!!

Known problem, covered ad infintum. Use Google....you'll find your answer
