Hal.dll missing, but CD fixes it?

L

Lee

I reinstalled XP Pro, worked fine. Restarted, and worked
fine. Removed my XP Pro install CD, I get the "Hal.dll
missing or corrupt" error. Decided to go in & check the
boot file, so I reinserted the CD. I forgot to hit a key
in time to boot from the XP cd, and lo and behold, the OS
loaded just fine. Tried it a few times. Apparently, if
the XP install CD is in, the OS will load. If not, no
joy, the "Hal.dll is missing" kicks up again.

I tried to rebuild the boot file, didn't help. Any ideas?

Extremely queer. Looks like presence of the CD somehow changes order of drive letters...
Do you have several hard drives or partitions?

Multiple drives, yes. 1 CD, 1 DVD, 2 HDD in RAID1, 1 HDD
w/ 2 partitions (one of which is the XP boot partition),
and 1 HDD with 1 partition.

As for the suggestion for editing the boot.ini file,
check, done that. Will do it again, just in case I missed
something, but I doubt it.

One last idea....the HDD with the boot partition is an
IBM Deskstar 75GXP. Perhaps a buggy one? But it has been
fine for 2 (?) years now.

Thanks for any other ideas!

Dear Lee,

Can't say I know how to solve your problem, but I'm
encountering the same error message except that mine is
not overcome by keeping the XP disc in the computer.
Quite a bit of fun, isn't it?

Try booting up using the XP CD-ROM and choose to repair. Then choose the
Recovery Console Option...
Choose the number corresponding to your XP version and enter your
Administrator Password (then press enter).

After that you'll see a command prompt...enter the following command:

bootcfg /rebuild" command to fix boot.ini.
FIXBOOT will fix the boot sector on the boot drive,
FIXMBR will fix the master boot record if the NT loader
complains of a missing HAL or unmountable boot volume.

After the process is completed enter the command EXIT to quit (and the
system should auto reboot OK from that point onwards...

you want to use the fixmbr command

Indeed, tons! Why go to Disneyworld when I can sit &
watch my computer taunt me?

Start->Run->SFC /scannow

This will require that you have your installation CD. It should scan the
drive for missing and damaged system files and repair them. I'm not sure if
you need to reapply any Windows Updates afterwards, so I'd visit the Windows
Update site afterwards.
