"I have an odd message that pops up when I try to boot up
my machine. When I either reboot my machine or cold boot
it, after going through most of the preliminaries it comes
up with the following message: "Windows could not start
because the following file is missing or corrupt: <Windows
root>\system32\hal.dll Please re-install a copy of the
above file." I have tried re-installing a fresh copy into
the\system32 folder but it continues to come up with this
message. The only way I can even get it boot up at all is
with a WIN XP boot disk (and I had to manually put this
hal.dll file on the boot disk). But I should not always
have to use the boot disk to start it up. Have you ever
heard of such a problem and would anyone happen to know
what else I can do to fix this. Thanks for any help you
can provide. David Wasmundt";
