When my brother started his computer the other day it gave him "The following
file.... missing or corrupt:
Hal.dll

The thing is, the computer had been working fine for about two weeks, (when
I last reinstalled windows after eventually giving up hope that it would
initialize the hard drive on its own) so I don't think it is the usual
"Installing XP on a system without an OS issue. I am concerned that the hard
drive might be failing or something, but right now I just want to make
windows work.

Could this be solved by plugging his hard drive into my rig and copying my
hal.dll file over his?

He uses XP pro, and has what should be a failry decent system, but one which
has always given us a lot of trouble.

I tried some of the things on the post you recommended in this mail without
success. Method 2 and 4 do not correct the problem and/or just result in an
error message.

The only one I am having a problem getting to attempt to work is the EXPAND
option 3. I get an "ACCESS IS DENIED" when attempting to execute
expand cd-rom:\i386\ntoskrnl.ex_ drive:\Windows\system32

I see reference to Login information but LOGON does not seem to do anything
and there are no prompts. How can I logon and is it necessary since prompts
for login information not coming up.
