Hackers in my machine?

I find that my WinXP, 900mhz P3 is running sluggishly and there is a lot of
disk activity when there doesn't seem like there should be. I also notice
that my network connection (cable modem - ethernet) is constantly sending
packets, about 100 per second, hour after hour. At this moment, after a day
of moderate internet usage, I am up to 10 million sent, 1 million received.
Is this normal, or is it possible that my PC has been hijacked by hackers
for that "porn scheme" I have heard of recently? How can I check for this?
I have spywareblaster installed. What more can I do about it?

Thanks in advance,
Steve

Hi Steve,
try DL and installing AdAware 6.0 1.81 from www.lavasoft.de and then run it
to remove all spyware from your system. I don't know anything about
spywareblaster but do know that AdAware is very thorough.

Hi Steve,

Do you have the firewall enabled? Right-click your connection, select
properties, go to the advanced tab.

Do a CAD...check for any process or applications running that don't
seem right.

Install a firewall that detects outgoing activity.

Run your defrag. Do you have indexing turned on?

Unplug the modem from the computer...see if you get any error messages
from any programs.

Run AdAware.

And to the OP: let's not forget about a current, updated antivirus
program! Scan with yours - you *do* have one, right?

My cable modem is attached to a Linksys BEFSR81 router that is a DCHP server
and assigns IP addresses to my PCs. Should this be enough in terms of a
firewall? I do not have the WinXP firewall turned on; is there any downside
to using it?
