I want to get rid of Windows GUI and use command line in an attempt to free
up RAM. If I use Command Prompt, it doesn't free up any ram. If I boot in dos
mode, I can't use all programs. I want to set it up so that I don't have
Windows GUI, but am still in Windows Mode. How can I do this?

You can't. The Windows GUI is an integral part of the
operating system. Also, Windows XP is not based on
DOS....you can only emulate DOS by using XP's Command
Prompt.

However, you could replace the explorer shell with another program, such as
cmd.exe, it still loads the GUI, however it does not load explorer... Is
this the kind of thing you are looking to do?

I guess. How would I do that.
You see, I don't want to load the Windows desktop and all those faggy icons
but I still want to be "in" windows. In windows mode or whatever.

So delete the icons. What do you want to see on your
monitor, a menu, a blank screen, win explorer?

Not quite. I'm not exactly sure if this will work properly or not but i'll
give it a try:
Click on the Start Menu -> Go to ALL PROGRAMS -> Go to ACCESSORIES -> click
on COMMAND PROMPT -> Press ALT ENTER

That's what I want it to do BY DEFAULT without EVER loading the desktop or
taskbar/startmenu.

You want to run everything from cmd.exe? You would still
have to use the GUI in the applications.

If you want a non-GUI system, go buy one. Like Linux, run without
XWindows

Hi

Start regedit.exe

Go to the key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Locate the value Shell, and replace the value data "explorer.exe"
with "cmd.exe"

There is also "MSCONFIG", boot.ini, /NOGUIBOOT, but I think maybe the OP
is just really confused about NT.
