"Guest user name appears when connecting to another computer on my network

G

Guest

When connecting to another computer from mine (XP Home edition) my computer shows that I am logging on to that computer as "Guest" and asks for a password. User "Guest" is grayed out on that notification so I can not change it. "Guest" as a user on my computer is disabled.

Any suggestions??

1. Open the Local Security Policy console in the Administrative Tools
folder, under the control panel.
2. Browse down to: Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Security
Settings\Local Policies\Security Options.
3. Double-click on the Network Access: Sharing And Security Model For
Local
Accounts.
4. Change the settings from Guest Only to Classic.
REBOOT!

disable guest on both computers,
then create a user account with the same password on both machines and logon
as that user.
you should be able to access resources with being asked for a password.

Hi -

All remote access to an XP Home machine is through the
Guest account. Everything's working the way it should ;-
)

Hope this helps -

When you attempt to connect to an XP machine,
and are met with this dialog:

Connecting to XP-BOX
Username: XP-BOX\Guest ( greyed out )
Password:

This means the machine you are attempting to *connect to* is configured
in a non self-consistent way.

This occours when:

The target machine has 'Simple File Sharing' enabled;
(Which sets the Forceguest registry entry to 1 )
( This FORCES all incoming connections to authenticate as 'Guest' )
( That's why the only username you can specify is Guest )

But has the Guest Account Disabled, or passworded.

Simple File Sharing *requires* the guest account to be enabled.
Someone must have gone in and disabled the Guest Account.
( If it is enabled, but passworded, then just supply the password to
connect! )

Fix: You must either:

1) Re-enable the Guest Account:
Start | Run | lusrmgr.msc;
Users;
Dbl-Click 'Guest';
Clear 'Account is Disabled'.

-or-

2) Disable Simple File Sharing, ( hence setting forceguest = 0 )
and then use conventional user accounts and ACLs and all the other
security stuff.
( You can't do this with XP Home, which always uses Simple File
Sharing. )

Reboot the target machine, and try to connect again.
