Running Windows XP Professional, SP1 and latest hotfixes.

I went to install the latest Catalyst drivers from the ATI website and did
as I was instructed. I attempted to uninstall the currently installed ATI
drivers.

This brought up a dialog box that told me to select a device (I assume to
uninstall.) There were 4 devices in there (I have one video card in my
system and this is not an 'all-in-...' type of Radeon 9700 Pro, just
generic.) I couldn't select any of them, so I couldn't uninstall any of
them.

So I had to hit cancel.

I then tried to install the latest drivers. This caused an error message
with the message box title being "Severe" and the message box text being
"Setup was unable to finish the installation." I tried again as I thought
this was a strange error. Same result.

I then rebooted. BANG, although the ATI software told me I couldn't
uninstall, the software was uninstalled and the hardware was now running as
'unknown chipset' type, vgasave was the driver. So, I assume, ok, it is set
to VGA, let's try to install. I install and get the EXACT same failure.
The end of the message states "...try setting your card to standard vga
before installing." Needless to say, anti-virus is turned off during this
process.

Running the uninstall again results immediately in an 'initialization error'
indicating that it is partially uninstalled but still showing up in the
'add/remove programs' utility.

So, I cannot uninstall, and I cannot install. There is nothing on ATI's
website about this (I searched the FAQ.)

Anybody have this happen to them? Suggestions? Is there some manual method
to removing everything ATI from my machine?

I found that to completely uninstall anything in XP, do it from safe mode.
XP will not uninstall anything that may still be resident in memory. I had
problem going from nVidia card to ATI for that reason - nobody makes a
proper uninstall routine, nobody! Uninstall from the Control Panel \ Add &
Remove Software in safe mode only.

Thanks for the tip :).

To get running again install the card as an S3 Virge - this is pretty much a
standard VGA and the system should boot ok with the card as an S3 Virge.
You will now find that you can 'update drivers' to Catalyst buy using the
'have disk' option and pointing the catalyst folder in ATI\Support\

If you don't install basic VGA drivers such as the S3 Virge then you will be
stuck with the 'vgasave' and keep going round in circles

FWIW I never uninstall Catalyst - I just install the new ones over the old
and it seems to work fine.

Good luck

Thanks TMack, your suggestion led in the right direction for a botched
uninstallation of ATI drivers... I've posted (in a new thread) the answer
for that particular problem...

Apparently our problems aren't exactly the same. I did the oem rename deal
hours ago, but I still can't get the new (or the old) catalyst drivers to
install.

The Microsoft Radeon driver installs, but the catalyst driver gives me a
"parameter incorrect" error I may just have to format and start from
scratch...

I renamed every oem file I had. I was able to get the standard vga driver
going, even able to run the microsoft Radeon driver, but no Catalyst (or cat
based omega's) would install.

Finally solved by running
Pnpreg -l

at the command prompt, as per Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 810509

SYMPTOMS
If you purchase and install third-party graphics adaptors, and if you use
the installation program that is provided by the manufacturer, you may
experience the following symptoms:
a.. The installation completes successfully, but you cannot later install
any additional hardware device drivers or other drivers.
b.. Your computer may exhibit unexpected behavior.
Following are examples of the type of error message that you might receive
that indicate this problem:

Access is denied.

The data is invalid.

The parameter is invalid.

Note: This issue is known to occur with the product Leadtek WinFast Titanium
200.
CAUSE
The Leadtek driver installation program incorrectly changes the security
attributes for the Enum branch of the Registry, which is critical for driver
installation. As a result, attempts to install drivers later are not
successful.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this behavior and correct the changes that the installation
program made, use the following command to run the Pnpreg tool from a
command prompt:

Pnpreg -l
