grouped objects and 3-D settings

I have a map of all 50 US states that's composed of individual freeform
shapes and text boxes. I've grouped and gradient-filled the ones where my
company has offices. Now I want to use a 3-D effect to "zoom" that group out
from the rest of the map. When I try, though, the effect gets applied to
each individual object instead of the group as a whole. Is there a way to
resolve this?

Thanks-

Karen,

I've just done a little test, and it worked for me (powerpoint version 2003,
individual states, graduated fills)

Double check that your objects are "grouped" (from the 'draw' menu.)

Thanks for your response.

I'm also working in PPT 2003 (SP1) and yes, my objects are grouped. I've
tried grouping them in several ways, in fact. (With the text boxes, without
the text boxes, with the city markers, without the city markers, with the
gradients, without the gradients....)

I'm mystified. I kind of remember having this problem a while back and
finding a work-around or some other solution, but I can't remember what it
might have been. I know that if I can convert the group to a single drawing
object, I'll be able to do what I want, but when I try, the fills go all
hooey.

Any suggestions are welcomed.

Hi, if you meant that the individual objects will zoom out one by one,
click on slide show > Custom Animation. In the task pane, did you see an
arrow that when you click, it will bring down a list of the zoom effect to
different objects? Leave the first effect as usual, while for the rest,
change to "Start: With Previous".

Sorry, that's not what I meant. This isn't part of a slide show, it's a
drawing.

I have a map of the whole US (made up of individual state-shaped freeform
shapes). I want to group the southeastern states as one object, apply a 3-D
effect to them so they (as a *group*) so they appear to "jump" out of the
rest of the map. Sort of like an inset, only more dynamic. The problem is,
even when the elements are grouped, the effect gets applied to each
individual state, so instead of a coolio effect, what I wind up with is a big
mess. I guess what I need to know is how to apply the effect to only the
outside edges of the group.

Thanks again-

Click on the edge once which will show white dots, then if you click again,
the dots will become grey in color with 'x' inside. This shows that the edge
has been selected. Apply the 3d effect now and see if other individual
objects will still be affected.
