graphic in Word 2007 causes vertical lines

After I insert a graphic in Word vertical lines appear on the right. How
can I eliminate the lines?
 
If you have Track Changes enabled, this could be a change bar?

If I remove the graphic, then the lines do not print additionally the are not
visible in print preview.
 
If they're not visible in Print Preview, then presumably they're just
artifacts of some kind.
