Granting access for a workstation user to a server share-name

R

Richard

Hi All,

I'm running a WinXP/SP2 workstation connected over a Microsoft
workgroup to a Win2003/SP1 server. I'm running under Admin-privileged
accounts on both machines.

I have created a share-name for a particular folder on the Win2003/SP1
server. When I click on the Permissions button, the Locations button
shows only one location: the server itself.

I'd like to add the workstation to the list of locations, and
thereafter select (or otherwise specify) a user account from the
workstation with the aim of granting permissions for that user to the
access the share (implicitly accepting the user's authentication on
the workstation).

Can I do that, and if so, how?

I tried adding the workstation name as shown on the workstation by
Control Panel | System | Computer Name.
The workstation name has the form MYMY1Z-SP2. Are computer names with
hyphens, digits or upper-case letters verboten?

Just a link to a page addressing this precise issue in detail would be
good enough for me.

TIA,
Richard

try add it as a "network place" first.

Hi Flamer,

Thanks for the reply.

I have (among others) two shares on the server:

Backups, with permissions only for a server administrative user:
Change, Read
Downloads, with permissions only for the same server administrative
user: Full, Change, Read

On the server, both shares:
Are seen in Network Places
Permit creation of a new folder and a file within the new folder

Both shares are seen on the workstation, where:

Backups:
- displays subordinate folders and their contents
- permits creation a new folder and populating and updating files
within it, as well as folder deletion

Downloads:
- fails when clicked
- displays msgbox declaring "\\ServerMachineName\Downloads is not
accessible. You might not have permissions to use this network
resource. ..."

As a further test, I:
- added a Temp share on the server with Full permissions for the
server admin account, as above
- saw it newly displayed on the workstation's Network Places
- was denied access as above
- reduced the access on the server to just Change, Read
- refreshed Windows Explorer on the workstation
- still no access to Temp

Do you have any ideas how I managed to add some shares that are
accessible to the workstation, while others are not?

Best wishes,
Richard

it must be permissions on the drive/folders on the machine the drives
are on.. is the workstation requesting a username and password when
you attempt to open the mapped drives?
