Gradebooks with missing grades

Hello, I am a second grade teacher and I just used an Excel Template to
create a gradebook based on points. I love it so far. I have one problem
though. When students in 2nd grade are absent I don't usually have them make
up the test. Thus I would like to note this in the gradebook and not have it
count against student average. Something like adding an "Ab" in that weeks
grade. The way it is set up now this score counts like a zero and brings
down (unfairly) the student average. Any help for an excel challenged
teacher? Thanks, Brian

Thanks for your help. I should have clarified further that I am a novice.
I don't even know where to put that formula. Sorry. I appreciate your help.
Thanks, brian

The simple answer to your question is that you need to decide which cell you
want the answer to appear in, then put the formula in that cell.

Another option to try is to use the AVERAGE function, as that won't count
the text entry.
If you've put a text entry in a cell, even =SUM(A1:A100)/COUNT(A1:A100)
won't be affected and won't treat it as a zero.

What formula are you using which is having the average upset by the text
entry?

I'm not sure what the formula is. I just used a template for grade books
based on points. I wonder if I changed from points to averages if that would
help. Not sure if it's possible to change template or if I have to start
over. I'd love to email you my document to see if you could figure something
out......pleeeeaaase! Thanks, Brian
