I have an application that has become unstable on Windows XP. When I try a
certain feature, the program gives me an error message: "Application_name" in
the blue title block:
An error has occurred in your application. If you choose Ignore, you should
save your work in a new file. If you Close, your application will terminate.
The only options displayed are Close and Ignore. Neither option works,
i.e., the application program fails choosing either option - Close or Ignore
- with the following message displayed:
"Application Error" in the blue title block. "Application_name" caused a
General Protection Fault in module module BC500RTL.DLL at 0001:1462. Choose
close. "Application_name" will close.
When I choose "Close," my application immediately closes; and all of my
modifications to the program are lost.
It was suggested that I re-load Windows, which I did. This did not correct
the problem. Excuse for omitting this fact: I am running Windows XP
Professional with all of the applciable SP1 updates; and most of the SP2
critical updates.
The application program was working swell for many months on my computer - a
Pentium 4 PC with 512MB of RAM, 2.4 GHz clock, and plenty of HDD space. Most
software that was installed (except the critical updates) was removed in my
effort to troubleshoot this problem. The only GPF troubleshooting info that
seems to be floating around is that there is some sort of device driver
conflict. I updated the device drivers for everything I can - they are the
latest and greatest - and even tried running Dr. Watson, since my application
is basically a 16-bit application.
I have not performed a "clean" install, because the computer itself - and
all of my Microsoft business applications, etc., have been working
flawlessly. I know that I did have to install MS-NET Framework 1.1 - and MS
C++ .NET 2002/2003 - about the time that the problems started, but I have
even rolled back those applications to no avail.
I am missing some key clue in troubleshooting this problem. I tried to run
Dr. Watson (old Win 95 routine), but Dr. Watson does not even detect the
error. Finally, at no time does my basic XP Pro system become unstable
itself. I can immediately re-open the application that crashed; and pretty
much re-enter the info that was lost. However, if I try to perform the same
function within the program, it will immediately crash again.
