Got new McAfee home products to work in Vista RC2

P

Peter

I have Viruscan 11 and Firewall Plus 8 (along with the new Security center
7) working fine without any tweaking in Vista RC2 (5744).

Personally I would never install a product from a manufacturer who is trying
to tell Microsoft how to handle security on a Microsoft product.

There are many of other manufacturers who have found, and will find, a way
to work around the security constraints that Microsoft has imposed in Vista.
Those are the companies I will be honoring with my money.

Ahh Richard,
We have agreed; lately over various issues.
This however, is a monetary matter for me;not an ethical one.
Buying OEM/Dell is the root cause.
They would not provide me a white box solution;when I naively purchased this
laptop;and insisted;along with a veritable plethora of JUNK software;that I
chose either Mcafee or Trend; which I initially went with Trend;blah blah
blah.
In the process they screwed up my pc order so badly-and 3 times; that as
compensation;was given a 3 yr subscription to McAfee/no charge; along with a
free upgrade from XP Home to PRO. Also various other perks etc.(monitor
upgrade;extra battery;3-yr full warranty;carrying case....)
So since Mcafee now has a Vista compatible solution(which-btw-they did
have before their public rant-VSE 8.1 beta);
I'm utilizing it;as it is valid until Oct. 09.
Ethics aside; money;Richard;has already been spent.
Jeff
P.S. Agreed;ridiculous accusations-sour grapes by Mcafee; I wholeheartedly
agree.

Hello Peter,

Ok, both programs DO install.. but-

Did you test the Firewall Plus 8? Because on two tests I've pitted this
against it has failed both. Time to turn back on Windows Firewall..

Doug

P.S I am a McAfee Online subscription owner of Virusscan, Firewall, and
Spamkiller. Spamkiller I've totally given up on since XP SP1. Let's see if
they can cancel my renewal for that one..bet they're like AOL was..;)

Jeff

Doug,
I installed Mcafee also today; subscription also.
What test did you try? I would like to also. I also installed Spamkiller;and
it already caught some junk e-mail.Which Outlook '07 didn't before;based on
Spamkiller's settings.
Also, back in XP; I had separately purchased McAfee Quickclean;which I
absolutely loved. Alot of people assume;the recycle bin actually deleted
files.
And now it's integrated in Mcafee.
All in all; I'm happy-was beta'ing One Care until Peter posted about
McAfee earlier.

Jeff
P.S. Would be interested in testing the firewall though

Hi Jeff,

Try 'Shields up' (grc.com) or PCFlank.com. Google them both, you will
find them;)

One note, there WAS a incompatibility message from Vista RC2 (which I am
running now) pertaining to the firewall issue when I was installing these
from McAfee. I ignored it at first but now I see why I should not have. But
no other errors. I'm wondering about the administration issues that come up
when installing programs but I'm not sure yet if this pertains to the
firewall issue.

I am back to the Windows Firewall, which by the way does not fail
either one of those tests..and I'm sure there are others out there that will
test firewalls, I just like these two:)

Good Luck.

Doug,
I had 2 results; PCFlank passed stealth; Shields Up;port 5000 UnPnP did
not.
Strange, must still be incompatable. So;fell back to the Vista
firewall;which passed-btw.

Passed with flying colours here (Shields Up). Mind you I am behind a router
too and can't at the moment remove it as my roomie is using his machine.

Peter;
Thx btw for posting about McAfee.
But back to the story;
I tried shields up; and it failed the stealth test-port
5000 -unpnp--passed with PCFlank.
Weird; Vista's firewall passed both tests. And I'm also behind a router.

5000 OK here too. Maybe your router firewall needs some "stealthing" ? I
know I had problems with port 113 with mine.

I have tried two Mcafee newbies for Vista -"Total protection" and "internet
security" both monster resource hogs. While touted as killer protection, I
was hit by FOUR Viruses during a six week run. An utter mess. I would'nt
spend a penny on this software. In the previous two years, I had ZERO viri.
Between Norton-another resource pig-and Zone Alarm, they do well with Vista
and keep you safe.
