Got a blue screen with writing and now error message "system\confi

I was opening my networking base management program when a blue screen came
up and said if screen never appeared before to re-start the PC. So I did and
then a error message came on that said somthing like my system\conig file was
either missing or corupt.
I tried the repair utility that is on the windows xp startup disc and it
didn't help. I did find a site on Microsoft that gave some instructions on
typing in some commands in the repair utility but that didn't work either??
Anyone have any help on this subject?? I hate to re-install windows
completely!! Thanks, Jim
