gold in the start menu

I have several application folder in the start menu that are highlighted in
gold. what is this all about?

Try this.

Right click the Start button | Properties |
Start Menu tab | Customize button | Advanced tab |
UNCheck: Highlight newly installed programs |
OK |Apply | OK

Highlight newly installed programs
[[Specifies that a new program installed on the computer is highlighted with
a different color in the All Programs list.]]

know where to find the fix.
