Hello

I have a question about memory and my motherboard. I am using
AMD Athlon 3000+ 64bit and a Gigabyte GA-K8NSC board. I have 2 stick
of pc3200 512 megs each, 1 stick pc2700 512 megs, and 1 stick pc210
256 megs. This board has 4 memory banks and I would like to use all
sticks together. I am under the impression that memory is revers
compatible. I am thinking that this would all run at pc2100. The AM
Athlon 3000+ will work with pc2100. I might be wrong but can this b
done? Any advise would be appreciated

Aren't you going to slow things down by using slower memory and
defeat the extra memory you're installing?

I guess you are right. I was just trying to use the memory I bough
over the years rather than just letting it sit around. I'll stic
with the pc3200

It's not worthwhile to add the 256MB of PC2100 in most
cases. As for the 512MB of PC2700, your board can probably
downclock the memory bus to PC2700 mode which is a
performance penalty, but the penalty would be offset by the
50% increase in amt. of memory. You'll have to consider
your specific uses of the system, whether they exceed 1GB.
Checking Task Manager after aggressively using the system
might be one index of whether it would help, the Commit
Charge, Peak value.

If you have a program or several programs that you run at the same time that
use more than 1GB of memory and cause your system to use virtual memory, you
will get a significant increase in performance by installing more memory,
even if the memory does run at the speed of the pc2700 instead of the faster
pc3200.

If you are actually using more than 1.5GB of memory, even the pc2100 memory
will help your performance even at its even slower speed.

If your system is not using more than 1GB of memory, then even if you bought
new pc3200 memory, it would not speed up your system at all, and if you
install the slower memory it will slow down your computer.

Use the Task Monitor to see if some combination of programs exceeds 1GB of
memory. If it doesn't, then you probably shouldn't install the slower
memory.
