Gigabit Switch for our Network?

D

Doc

Anyone have any suggestions for a Gigabit non-managed 16 to 24 port
switch (not layer 3)...?

IT will be going into our Netware / Win2K server network ...
Would like to stick with the "same" maker as the NICs we'll be buying
(of course that may be hard with the DELL switches, or even CISCO)

Have been wondering about Zxyel, Netgear, SMC, 3COM, and DELL.

Anyone help??

As far as cost-to-quality ratio, we have had very good luck with HP
switches.

Now-a-days switchs have matured to the point that any of them will probably
do a good job and "standardization" is solid enough that you can mix brands
without a problem as long as you don't get into VLANs. If you get into VLANs
then you may want to stay uniform with the manufacturer. We are pretty much
working on HP Routers & Switches (with VLANs) on the LAN side and Cisco
routers on the WAN side. Our LAN HP Router is really the 5304xl
Router/Switch combination in one box.

Thanks Phillip, have heard good things about the HP. We are contracted
with CDW , will see what they carry and how fast. Danka!

Netgear makes a reliable, unmanaged 10/100/1000 switch...I've had good luck with their product and their price point is reasonable.

I've been seriously looking at a Netgear switch. The modules for our
HP switches would get me at most two ports for the cost of the Netgear
unit. I'll be interested in anything others post on this as well.

I have used Netgears for some time. Like them, but have not ever used
the Gigabit models. Of course I would believe that manufacturing
practices run across the board within one company, usually the same
factory (so to speak)...

We are going with a DELL Gigabit switch inside the server room for
directly off the patch panel. We are a DELL office and all the servers
that have GIG are DELLs... but we are tossing up the coin between
the two or three smaller SWITCHES for upstairs between 3COM and NETGEAR.

Also trying to find out if we SHOULD go MANAGED in the server room. I am
not sure it will help right now, but maybe later when we add another
ten nodes of GIG stuff. ANYONE tell me what are the benefits of Switch
management for small (35-40 nodes) office?

MANY thanks!
