Hi,

I am moving from 802.11g WLAN router with integrated ADSL modem, to a
cabled network in my new house. I'd like to use a simple ADSL or cable
modem and an 8-port gigabit router to quickly share huge files/media
from one room to another and access the internet from all computers.
I'll add WLAN as an access point later for downstairs.

Any reasonable router recommendation ?

First you can't use a ADSL Modem on Cable. Cable requires a Cable Modem as the
communication protocols differ.

Second I don't think you'll find a SOHO Router with an embedded Gigabit Ethernet switch.
You are better off just getting a plain old Router and a separate Gigabit Ethernet switch.

You should also realize that Wireless doesn't even come close to Gigabit Ethernet speeds.
Even a 54Mb/s wireless connection is roughly half of fast Ethernet and it also will
step-down the bandwidth based upon distance and signal quality so I doub't you will even see
54Mb/s.

Sure, I know that. I have the choice between cable or ADSL in my area,
so my point is that the ADSL or the cable modem don't have to be
integrated in the gigabit router (or switch, whateever I choose to use).

That is what I am beginning to realize. However D-link offers an ADSL
modem, with 54 MBps WLAN and integrated gigabit 4-port switch :o)

Over WLAN (802.11g)I transfer about 1.5 Mb/sec through my router.
Through the same router, with the same computers but hardwired, I can
transfer big files at 6.5 Mb/sec max.

I'd like to transfer data at a sustained rate of over 15 MB/sec from
computer to computer, that's whay I need a gigabit LAN.

Thank you for your input anyway.

Thank you Jack,

This pretty much summarizes the situation...

I'll consider placing a computer with decent server OS and configure the
others as clients, since this is mainly how the network is supposed to
work : storage and file serving, plus HTML and FTP serving.

.... or I'll be happy with what I have and buy my wife flowers and new
toys for my kids, which would make me more popular at home that building
networks ;)

I recommend the D-Link DGL-4300. It's gigabit and the G wireless is
WPA2.
