Gifs won't show up as thumbnails

I recenlty installed Office 2003. This wiped out MS Photo Editor which was
the default Gif and Jpeg viewer. So I reinstalled it and made the
associating, which works fine now. But I still the the problem that in File
Explorer Gifs and Jpegs won't show as thumbnails, either to the side of the
file list or as icons when Thumbnail View is chosen. I can see Word
thumbnails and even Adobe Photoshop files as thumbnails, but no plain old Gif
or Jpegs. How can I fix this. It's really annoying to have to try and fix
what should already work in the first place. I've asked on dozens of groups
and gotten no help.
