Gibberish

Looking for suggestions of where to look for a problem.

Have a home wired network using a Netgear RT-314 router. One box is
XP the other 98. Recently when I copied a folder from the XP to the
98 box the folder showed multiple sub-folders with gibberish names.
Ditto for the file contents.

The original XP folder is clean. Verified by having hidden files
showing as well. Ran Memtest on the receiving 98 box and that
produced no errors.

Files produced solely on the 98 box seem fine.

Anti-virus is current and finds nothing.

Were you file names under XP longer than 32 characters? I can't remember
the exact number but there was a file name length restriction in Win98.
