Ghosting dissimilar computers

Mark

I have all Dell computers, unfortunatley we have 7
different models however. That makes things a little
difficult when trying to create new images and things
like that. My problem is if I create a 2000 image with
the software I want on it and run sysprep and then use
ghost to make an image and try to image a different model
when the ghosting is complete and the computer restarts,
the very moment windows tries to load I get a blue screen
with a 0x0000007B Inaccessible_Boot_Device error. So it
appears to me that putting in OEMPreinstall lines and
adding PnP drivers into the image doesn't help when I
cannot even get into windows. Does anyone have a
solution for this problem? I would love to be able to
just create one image and use it for all my computers
especially making it easier on my staff to do as well.

This is a problem when using images. You might want to consider a
complettely different approach, for example
http://unattended.sourceforge.net/

The idea is to set up unattended installations of os, hotfixes and
programs. One huge advantage of this is besides the obvious that you
need not have an all in one setup. If you change your setup you don't
have to create a new machine to image, rather just add or change
whatever to the setup. And of course when you have a battery of new
software to install on all machines, just do a setup for that specific
software.

Hey if you have a laptop use is as your master, for some reason which has to
do with Mass Storage devices, it works. Now in Xp i got it to work all the
way around, but for 2000 i imaged a laptop IBM A31 then syspreped it with
all drivers for every machine which we have all dell's to gx150,260,270,340
plus few Hp's, but it took about 3 weeks to get all machines to load
correctly and drivers to beinstalled but was worth the time, cause it saved
way more time than we know,Also uninstall all Infrared port devices if you
have them.\

I actually got it to work. I downloaded sysprep 1.1 and
used the [SysprepMassStorage] line under the unattend
section and it worked beautifully. I am not working on
the PNP part with adding the drivers, so far everything
seems great. Thanks for you input.

I am wondering..

How do you know what to write under the
[SysprepMassStorage] section? I have googled a little
around and found examples with very cryptic, for example:

PCI\VEN_10B9&DEV_5215=%systemroot%\inf\mshdc.inf
PCI\VEN_10B9&DEV_5219=%systemroot%\inf\mshdc.inf
PCI\VEN_10B9&DEV_5229=%systemroot%\inf\mshdc.inf
PCI\VEN_1097&DEV_0038=%systemroot%\inf\mshdc.inf
PCI\VEN_1095&DEV_0640=%systemroot%\inf\mshdc.inf

I downloaded sysprep 1.1 off the MS website, included in
that was a sample sysprep.inf file, that I copied the
massstorage section from and, that has seemed to work on
all of my computers thus far.

was add oempnpdriverspath= with the driver folder with every driver in it.
