Ghost music

I have XP pro, had media player as the default. My
daughter got an ipod for Christmas, and Quicktime
was apparently installed as part of that. It has
made itself the default player. I have gone into
the media player and checked all of the boxes, and
into Quicktime and unchecked them, but nothing has
changed. Video clips still play in Quicktime, and
I can't figure out how to undo that.

But the biggest problem is ghost music. When I
play a video clip, an instrumental tune plays,
that has nothing to do with the clip. And it won't
stop. I have to reboot to get it to stop, and as
soon as I play another video, any video, the same
instrumental begins playing, and continues until
reboot.

I have cleared the cache, and looked everyplace I
know to look, but I can't find where this music is
coming from.

Any help would be appreciated.

That ghost music is strange. You can track it down to find out what
app is making it play. If I understood you corrently, you stated
that it plays with any video and continues to play even after you
close out the player; because you have to reboot to get it to stop.

Try this:

1. reboot the computer and don't open anything. (music shouldn't be
playing)
2. Open Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Del - press and hold in that order
and let go all at once)
3. Click on the Processes tab and write down everything you see
listed.
4. Play a video to start the ghost music
5. Let it run for 15secs and close the player

From what I understood, the ghost music is still playing at this
point

6. Open Task Manager again. Do you see anything listed under apps?
If so, that's your culprit. If not, click on the Processes tab and
compare what you see listed with what you wrote down. Whatever that
extra item is, click on it and hit "End Process". If the music stop
playing, now you know what it is.

If you can't identify the application associated with that item,
post back with the exact name.

Hope this helps,
Sam
