Ghost incremental backups unscheduled?

L

Louise

I've just purchased Ghost 9. My plan was to do a full image
periodically and in between, do incremental backups - to a USB hard
drive. Running Win XP Pro.

The full image is working fine.

I want to be able to do incremental backups when I want to - when I'm
not using my computer - NOT on a schedule because my usage times are
erratic and a scheduled backup, no matter when I set it for, will
interrupt me - I want to do manual incremental backups every day.

I've searched the help files and it looks to me like I can do a manual
image when I want to, but incrementals have to be scheduled. Is there
any way around this or have I missed something?

TIA

Louise

No they dont, its just poor documentation.

Just set it up as you are told to and it should be obvious how to
do the incremental backups manually once you have done that.

Once you have setup the backup job, in the advanced view,
just select the Backup Jobs tab and see that job listed as
unsheduled. There will be a 'run job now' entry in the
Backup Job Tasks list on the left when you have the job selected.
Is there any way around this

Yep, its trivial to do in practice.
or have I missed something?

The documentation has basically.

Thank you so much. Yes, it's obviously right there and the
docomentation is TERRIBLE. You've solved my dilemma and my fear that I
couldn't comfortably use Ghost as my backup program.

Ghost seems to "know" that when I hit the run backup option, it will do
an incremental backup. How does it know when it's time to do another
full image?

Thanks.

Just yesterday, I gave up on Ghost 9. Too buggy for my taste. Others
have made similar comments. Perhaps with work it will function
consistently, but why put so much work into it when Drive Image 2002
and Ghost 2003 work so well. I installed Ghost 9 onto a fairly new
install of XP SP2, and it hangs, crashes, and fails to liveupdate. So,
I'm giving up for now, and going back to the tried and true by putting
DI 2002 back on.

I have Drive Image 7 laying around, maybe it will work better even
though Ghost 9 and DI 7 are similar programs.

It keeps a full track of what backups were done and can work it out from that.

Don't know if your problem with XP SP2 was because of the following, but
will quote part of the applicable Ghost document just in case. Sam

Norton Ghost 9.0 compatibility with Windows XP Service Pack 2
Situation:
You need to know if Norton Ghost 9.0 is compatible with Windows XP Service
Pack 2.

Solution:
Norton Ghost 9.0 is compatible with Windows XP Service Pack 2. However, you
need to modify the Data Execution Prevention (DEP) policy to allow Norton
Ghost 9.0 to launch its services during startup.

If you have already installed Ghost 9.0 and Windows XP Service Pack 2, see
the document Blue screen error after installing Norton Ghost 9.0 or Windows
XP Service Pack 2

I know this isn't what you asked, but True Image is pretty good at
this. Once you've scripted various backups with the wizard (full,
incremental, different source/destination drives, whatever), you can
have it do any of them; just select the one you want and tell it to
run now.

I only tried Ghost 8 briefly, because it just wasn't user friendly and
I don't have the time to diddle with cantankerous software. Haven't
tried Ghost 9 because TI is working well for me.

and how does one alter the Data Execution Prevention (DEP) policy to allow
Norton Ghost 9.0 to launch its services during startup??

Cheers
