Getting word wrap to work in a merged cell

Excel 2003, SP3. I have 2 horizontal cells merged into one. I have "Wrap
Text" turned on. However, when I type text longer than the cell length, it
does not expand vertically to show the text. It just truncates the text in
the cell display. If I unmerge the cells, the wrap works fine, the row
expands. The row height is not set to a fixed value. I have tried Autofit
with no help other than reduce all merged cells to one row high. Is there a
way to fix this?? Or is this just a bug in Excel.

Merged cells are the spawn of Satan and should never be used. Not even
once.

That said, I'm not sure if it's a bug or a feature, but merging cells
turns automatic row height adjustment off.

If you're trying to center over a range of columns, use Center Across
Selection (Format/Cells/Alignment/Text Alignment/Horizontal) instead

If you like to make life difficult for yourself, you can continue to use
merged cells, and adjust row height using a macro developed by Jim Rech:
