Getting WinXP firewall to stay on

How do I get the firewall that comes with WinXP Home to
stay on, once I check the appropriate box? I've had to do
this several times, as every time I turn off the computer
and then later turn it on again, the box for enabling the
firewall is unchecked (after I'd already checked it).

Is is necessary to check this box before each time I go
online?
