getting to msconfig or regedit

Becky

I cannot get to msconfig or regedit from the Run prompt
in win2k. Is there another way to get there? Thanks in
advance.

Greetings --

MSConfig won't run, as it's not included in Win2K. Otherwise, the
type of behavior you describe is typical behavior of more than one
virus/worm, the three below being the most common:

W32.Klez
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/[email protected]

W32.Yaha
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/[email protected]

W32.Spybot.Worm
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.spybot.worm.html

Because many of the newer viruses and worms, such as the
Spybot mentioned above, can disable antivirus applications whose
definitions aren't kept up-to-date, try using one or more of the free
on-line scanners to double-check your system.

Trend Micro - Free online virus Scan

McAfee Security - FreeScan

1.) There is no msconfig in Windows 2000. You can copy it from Windows XP

2.) What happens when you try?

What I really need to do is find out if an employee had
downloaded improper images to their computer and has now
deleted them because they realized I know. I actually
need to be able to show proof of what I've found. I was
trying to get to the registry so I could search for stuff
like that. What I found originally was a zip file that
was labeled clearly - and later deleted by this employee.
Recycle bin also emptied, history as well. Thanks in
advance.

There's nothing like that in the registry. You'll want to get a tool
something like.

Thank you. One last question - perhaps you can tell me.
Is it possible for someone to have a zip file saved to
their hard drive, that they didn't put there?

Possibly check the date/ time stamp on the file may reveal something. Any
number of virus are responsible for unknown files. If the pc is connected to
a network then anyone with access to the drive could have also placed files
on the drive.

Check Temporary Internet files and Cookies folders for the user, you
might find some evidence of sites visited in there.

It *is* her business. Employees do not own the computers they use at
work and they are supposed to be working, not playing games, downloading
porn and music. What they do at home on their own computers is their
business. This is not a matter of personal privacy, it's a matter of
abusing internet access in the workplace and an employer has every legal
right to monitor the computer habits of employees.

Take your own advice.

Certainly. Depending on the machine configuration and the network(s) it's
connected to, there are any number of ways that a file can be saved to a
hard drive without the user's conscious involvement. Automatic updates do
precisely that. Various kinds of malware, which the users can stumble
across totally unaware, are notorious for doing that. Co-workers with
access to the machine can do that.

My machine at work has hundreds of file that were not present in the
initial install and were stored without my knowledge or involvement. Most
likely all of them are appropriate, but I would not bet more than a nickel
that every single one is.
