Getting rid of old parts

D

Dave Navarro

I have a closet full of old working parts (ISA cards, Pentium and P2
motherboards, 72-pin SIMMs, hard drives, etc.) that I want to get rid
of.

My wife wants me to just toss them in the trash, but I'd prefer to give
it to some organization that can actually use it.

I've done a search on the Net and contacted a few places, but they have
no interest in old parts, just new stuff (like I'd get rid of any of my
new stuff <grin>).

Someone has got to be building a cluster of Linux machines using old
parts or something.

For the heck of it, I tried putting some of it on eBay for $1, but most
of it didn't sell. So tossing it in the trash or finding someone who
can use it is my final solution.

Make a list of what you've got, then post it here saying that you'll
send it to anyone interested for the cost of shipping. The parts will
find a good home with someone like me who loves to "play" with old
parts, but really doesn't have the budget to pay lots of $$$ for the
parts.

One of my current projects is building two or three MP3 players out of
old Pentium computer parts. I've got one built and tested already,
and am working on building a suitable audio component case for it
(starting with the case of an old, dead, audio CD player).

Make the subject of your post something like, "Old PC parts, FREE to a
good home". ;-)

I am always looking for old computer stuff for my ISA-based machines.
Tell you what, I will trade you an 8" floppy disk drive and some S-100
buss boards for some of your stuff. You don't know what old really is!

Do you know if any of your P2 motherboards can accept
hard drives bigger than 32Gigs? I could really use 1-4
of them.

Also, I would really love any hard drives 1.0Gig and up.
Hard drives die on me all too often, and I can never have
too many of them.

Thanks! (I hope)

~snip~

Also try the *.forsale.computers newsgroup for your local area (or just
plain *.forsale if you don't have a specific *.computers NG)

It's not uncommon to see ppl give away old computer parts and there are
*always* takers.

Good luck!

I have one or two 1.2 gig drives still around here somewhere, I'll dig
them up for the next posting.

Mostly under 1 gig, but I have one or two 1.2 gig drives around here
somewhere.

I'm in southwest Florida.

Ooh, that'd be awesome!

But on a slightly altruistic note, it's obvious from this
thread that everyone here wants your old stuff. Maybe you
should put it back on e-bay, and post links to your auctions
here? That way, we can duke it out to see who wants what
the most, and you can make a little money while you're at it.

The main problem with e-bay is getting anyone to notice
your auction(s) in the first place. If you post the links
here, then we'll all certainly notice them.

I hate spam as much as the next person and methinks posting ebay notices
here would be considered spamming.

Besides, if it didn't sell a second time, I'd definitely have to toss it
in the trash. Not to mention that I'm getting a decent response.

The important thing is that these parts get a loving and nurturing new
home where they will feel useful.

In other newsgroups, I've seen folks prefix all of their "for sale" or
"for auction" messages with an "FS:" or "FA:" in the subject line.

Yes, it's kind of like spam, but on the other hand, if it's marked as
such, then it's easy to filter out by those who don't want to see it.

Just a thought!

I don't think you should throw those things away.

Its very likely they actually contain hazardous chemicals. Take them to a
hazardous recycling or something.

I mean one person wouldn't have any effect, but person after person, year
after year is not good for our water supply.

Hey! e-mail me a list of what you've got. I'd be happy to pay shipping
and something for handling if you'd be willing to box it up and send
it my way.

You would be surprised at how much older computer hardware and memory people
will buy at a yard sale. Don't expect much, but it might help you buy a
newer graphics or sound card. Thats how I got most of my new computer I put
together paid for.
