Getting rid of multiboot

T

Tony Williams

I started to install XP on a machine that already ran W2K. Part way through
the installation I discovered that I couldn't install XP in the same
partition and decided to exit the installation. However by this time the
setup had created the multiboot logon screen and now when I switch the
machine on I get to choose W2K or XP but XP isn't installed. How do I get
rid of this multiboot choice and go back to W2k as the only operating
system?
Thanks
Tony

Tony - there are several options - one is:

1. Start>Run>Msconfig>Boot.ini tab>there is an option titled "Check all boot
paths" - select it. Restart computer.

Tony,

The additional entry in the startup options can be removed by editing the
Boot.ini file present in the C:\. Follow these steps for Windows 2000.

To edit the Boot.ini file:

1.In Windows Explorer, click Folder Options on the View menu.
2.On the View tab, click Show All Files, and then click OK.
3.Click the root folder of the local hard disk, right-click the Boot.ini
file, and then click Properties.
4.Click to clear the Read-Only, Hidden, and System check boxes, and then
click OK.
5.Open the Boot.ini file in Notepad.
6.Remove any entries that no longer point to valid installations of Windows.
7.Save the changes to the Boot.ini file, and then restore its attributes. To
restore the file's attributes, repeat steps 3 and 4, but click to select the
check boxes.
