Getting rid of Google

*Getting rid of Google*
________________

I have uninstalled the Beta version of Google Desktop Search and
am left with an unwanted Start-up Key that cannot be deleted.

I do not wish to use Google Desktop Search.

(There are no folders, exe, Reg Keys or anything else left that is tagged
Google.)

-----------------------------------------------------------
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]

"Google Desktop Search"="\"C:\\Program Files\\Google\\Google Desktop
Search\\GoogleDesktop.exe\" /startup"
-----------------------------------------------------------------

If I delete this Key in the Win Registry and refresh, it is replaced
immediately.

**So, my question is: What has GDS left on my PC that monitors this Key
and where can I look to eradicate it?

Any help would be appreciated ..

Have you tried msconfig yet?
sometimes you can disable a program at boot there.
sometimes it works, others ..well

Open Task Manager and see if GoogleDesktop.exe is still running. If so, end
it and then remove it's startup entry. BTW, it's possible that the program
has not been uninstalled completely.

GoogleDesktop.exe is still running ..

I uninstalled this Beta some time ago. I prefer Windows Search.
Unfortunately the programmers at Google did not write the proper uninstall
program. They left 3 Reg Keys behind. Google site tells you how to delete
them, but the Start-up Key will not delete.

Have downloaded all the pages of the links you posted and will go through
them. Thanks..

Thought they might be using Group Policy or something, not avaiable for XP
home but a virus used it recently to turn off Win Firewall.

Found this at Lockergnome:::
Implement Logon Scripts In XP

11.04.2005 @ 12:40 PM PT | Diana Huggins | Comment | Send to Friends | Discuss

You can configure logon scripts to run on a local computer that is not a
member of a domain. By doing so, the script that you specify will run when a
user logs on to the local computer. You can enable logon scripts using the
group policy editor.

You can follow the steps to assign user logon scripts.

XP logon script configuration details pane automate Diana Huggins

1. Click Start and click Run.
2. Type gpedit.msc and Click OK.
3. Expand the following: User Configuration\Windows Settings\Scripts
(Logon/Logoff).
4. In the details pane, double click Logon.
5. Click Add.
6. Click Browse to locate the script you want to use and click Open.
7. Click OK.
8. Type in any script parameters you want to use and Click OK.
9. Click OK.

Now when a user logs onto the local computer, the logon script will
automatically run.

I know how to edit the Windows Reg, use MSConfig, services.msc, etc, and
have been through Win 95, 98, ME and now XP.

Never have I come across this. DELETE the Google REG Key - HIT REFRESH -
and IT IS BACK. It cannot be deleted.

*DELETE

Will post back after I study all the link downloads you provided - thanks.

Maybe Google is an innocent ..oogle?

Sinister new development ..

As I've had Dexpot 1.3 - virtual desktops installed for some time I find
that I am still basically using the one desktop. Maybe old habits. But the
other 3 desktops where accumulating more and more icons (folders & shortcuts)
so it had to go.

Uninstalled it - and guess what - right, the Reg Key will not delete and is
alongside Google.

GOD. I called Google everything under the sun at some other forum. Now I'm
going to have to strip off buck naked and walk through a shopping center as
penance. At 5 to 6pm near closing time although there are bound to be plenty
of digital little camera bugs still about. Be posted - and - on Google
search by 7.

I'll have to buy a Google book page. Give me page 357 of any Wilbur Smith.
I'll have to say I live on Sunset Blvd so Google maps can find me.
I'll have to hire a software-as-a-service. What have you got Google?

So, if Google was NOT TO BLAME for leaving the Reg Key behind - who is??????

So, I thought it must be Group Policy, used to stop the workers from making
changes. (Hello to the Microsoft group in India - way to go guys.) But it's
not.

*This led me to suspect it might be one of my Antispyware Resident programs.
But which one???

Scotty the dog (WinPatrol)
AdWatch (Ad-Aware)
Couldn't be Spyware Blaster?
Teatimer (Spybot S&D)
Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta

My bets on Microsoft in Real Time Protection - Application Agents - Startup
Registry Files.

Turn everything off except MS. It's not that.

What about Teatimer (Spybot S&D)

Turn everything off except Teatimer. It's not that.

NO. There is a setting in AdWatch (Ad-Aware) called Blocking Options - Lock
start-up section.
You must disable this.

Not too easy to pin down, but this is it, apparently ................

You must still delete the Startup program Key in RegEdit..

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]

Then delete the Startup program Key..

-------------------------------------------------

You must still delete the Startup program Key in RegEdit..

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnceEx]

Then delete the Startup program Key..

-------------------------------------------------

*You should now be able to do it with Msconfig if you want..

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

At last, after a week of midnight-to-dawn hair pulling. The solution is so
simple. Should have seen it before.. But then there still is the problem of
the naked walk as ..oogle penance!

To sleep .. perchance to dream. At last. Chow bambino.

PS. Thank you to everyone that tried to help, I read all the link pages with
interest.
