John

I would like the "getting started" pane to NOT show up when I launch word.
I have unchecked the "startup task pane" in the options dialog but the damn
thing still shows up every time! I've restarted the computer and Word to no
avail. Help!

Thanks. Anyway to unload this after it's used to fix the behavior? It
seems to increase word's load time significantly.

Remove it from Word's Startup folder.

There's an assumption that we know the location of Word's start-up folder.

It seems that the startup folder must vary based on Word version and OS. I'm
still trying to find/delete some add-ins. Sneaky little devils are hiding
from me. lol.

Doesn't startup folder vary based on Word version and OS?

The Word startup folder does indeed vary with operating system. It is
defined in tools > options > file locations > startup.
For the latest OS and Word version that will be
C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Microsoft\Word\Startup

The Office startup folder varies with Office version, but will be found
under C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\ eg for Office 2003 it would be
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\STARTUP

Many thanks again for all the help. That damn pane was driving me nuts!

Had no problems with 2002, but 2003 just didn't want to obey :-)
