Getting red X 's instead of pictures

Hi'
All of a sudden I am getting a blank window with Red X's in the top lefthand
side of a window which should show a picture etc.

Win XP home SE
2.6 CPU
1 Gig mem.
How do I get rid of these X's and get back whatever is suppose to be there?
