Getting #Num! in my ACCESS query

I have a query which gets its data from an Excel spreadsheet and a database.
One of the columns in the Excel spreadsheet is named EDD and contains 4
numeric characters (julian date), but the data is treated as text. In my
query, the data in the EDD field appears as #Num! rather than 4277, for
example. I checked the properties on the linked spreadsheet (table) in ACCESS
and the EDD field says "text". The format on the EDD column in the Excel
spreadsheet is set at "general". I have changed it to "text" and updated the
link in ACCESS, but to no avail. Can anyone help? Thanks.
