Getting IM's and Messenger not on

E

Ed.

I have both Windows Messenger 4.7 and 6.0. I have them set to not run in
background and when windows starts. They don't run in background nor start
when windows starts.

I have cable modem via my cable TV company. I also have AOL. My name for
Windows Messenger is my AOL email address. Don't know if this has anything
to do with my problem or not.

What is happening is that when I am online with my cable and not on AOL and
Windows Messenger not running, someone can send me an IM via Windows
Messenger. How can this be? I thought maybe cause I had the AOL name for
it also. But, AOL isn't running to show that I am online. Perhaps a prior
session of AOL when shutdown, doesn't log me off on Windows Messenger. Then
I am showing when I am not Windows Messenger.

Is Windows Messenger supposed to be showing me online in Windows Messenger
when I do have AOL running?

When they IM me, I get the message by the clock that I have recieved an IM.
Then I click on it to see it and then the person loses me. They say when
they IM me I am only on for a few seconds and then I am gone.

I have a couple friends when I run Windows Messenger, it shows them as
online. But, they aren't online. They have all there settings also to not
run when Windows starts and not to run in background. They also get
messages as I do from people when they don't have their Windows Messenger
running.

Is this some recent security glitch or something like that no one seems to
be aware of? It just started doing this a couple of weeks ago. It was
before installing Windows Messenger 6.0 so that can't be blamed on 6.0. In
fact one of my friends I mentioned doesn't have 6.0 installed.

Thanks for any info,
Ed.

Greetings Ed,

Do you have Norton Antivirus 2003 installed? Norton added a new "instant messaging scanning"
feature to Norton Antivirus 2003, which can conflict with Messenger and cause this behavior.
To stop it, open Norton Antivirus (Right-click on the Norton Antivirus icon in the System
Tray/Notification Area (by the clock), choose 'Open Norton Antivirus'), click Options, then
Instant Messenger then uncheck MSN Instant Messenger and click OK.
