Hi I sent this question in yesterday - please could some helpful soul out
there help with my problem - well, my parents computer problem - I'm fine!
regards,
JacquieCC

Hi again,
I have started another line as I am not sure I explained my slef properly
and I have gathered a bit more info on the problem.
I am not a computer boff so although I think it is all related - it may not
be.

These are the problems that are occurring.
1. When I use and save certain files - especially Word and Excel as it is
these I use the most, when I save the file a window then pops up saying:
'The instruction at Ox62304390 referenced memory at Ox62304390. The memory
could not be 'read'. Terminate the program.
2. I have realised that the computer is not saving any changes I make to
Outlook - I changed the concetion to Internet - it stays on the previous
connection when I turn the computer on the next time. The same happens when I
change server connections on email accounts.
3. When I turn the computer off I get the following message: 'End Program -
MCCWSAWin... This program is not responding. To return to Windows....etc etc
Click Cancel. If you cjhoose to end the program immendiately you will lose
any unsaved data.'
Wherther I click on End Program or Cancel or just the 'x' the result is the
same - the computer turns off but none of the changes I made to any programs
remain.
4. The System restore facility no longer works either for one day previously
or one year - it has just disapeared.

The computer is not actually mine but my parents as we live in differnet
parts of the world - however I am here now - therefore I do not know since
when this has been happening as they use the computer for only very simple
purposes. I do hope I will be able to resolve the issue before I go home
next week,

regards,
JacquieCC

First of all posting over and over is annoying and usually has a negative
result. Having said that...,

If the computer is several years old the hard drive _may have_ errors on it.
There _could_ also be a problem with one or more memory modules.

Things to try first:
1) Start with a good clean up. Remove Internet cache files (cookies *.txt),
temporary files (*.tmp) etc. Run an anti-virus program and anti-spyware
removal tools too. Clear the recycle bin. Now you rule out anything there.

2) Right-click Desktop > Properties > "Screen Saver" tab > turn off the
screensaver (if running). Click "Power" button. Change "Turn off monitor",
"Turn off hard disks", and "System standby" to never.

3) Right-click "My Computer" > select Manage > Disk Defragmenter. The
Analyze button shows you the fragmentation. Click the "Defragment" button to
defragment the disk C:. It may take a while so be patient.

3) Reverse the changes in step #2. Shutdown the computer. Wait several
minutes (2-3), then turn it back on. This is a "cold boot". Let the computer
and Windows complete all startup processes before you try to do anything.
See if the problem persists.

You can also get information from the Events Viewer. Start > Run > type
"eventvwr.msc" (no quotes) > click OK. The left pane shows the categories.
Applications and System are mostly what you need to look at. The right pane
will display all the events logged for a selected category. Selecting a
particular event will show detailed information. You can cut and paste it in
a post here for further help.

Hi everyone and thanks for the replies so far.
Well I have done everything (except formatting the disc and reinstalling the
OS) you have all suggested but to no avail.
My parents computer has Norton Internet security which updates
automatically. I scanned weith this yesterday after making sure the updates
were updated. it came up with nothing.
I also scanned with Microsft Live one care - the free clean up - it did come
up with 288 items, 4 severe problems - seemingly it dealt with these. I then
turned off the screen saver, Turn off monito, Turn off hard discs, system
standby to never. I fragmented the disc. I did not reverse any of the
changes as I wanted to see if the computer would actually save the changes.
I have turned on the computer this morning and no changes have been saved.
I suppose that all the items that Live One Care also remain and were not
deleted as I did it the other day and the same items came up - hence when I
turn off the computer changes are not saved to the operating system..

On the events viewer in Applications the repeating errors are 1517, 1000,
1001, 1002, 1004, 1524, 2002, 101
On the events viewer in system - error codes reported are 7000, 7009 (BT
modem), 1073 (power off)

I have looked on C disk and although I am not sure of what files
should/should not be there there is one file which I believe is a remnant of
a Microsoft security patch - msxml4-KB927978-enu - is that correct - I do not
think this file is harmful.

Please help,

regadrs,
Jacquie

Have you tried a repair of the office programs. From Add/Remove programs
click on change/modify and run the repair. There are specific newsgroups
for Excle, Word and the other office apps.

http://www.microsoft.com/communitie...da5-518a-4900-8a9f-2b76aa8d1ea0&lang=en&cr=us

Look at the groups under microsoft.public.office and those under excel and
word.

If you haven't already You might want to post to an Outlook newsgroup for
help on it.

What happens when you start into safe mode? Does this error still occur?
If not do some clean boot troubleshooting:

4. The System restore facility no longer works either for one day

Could be do to the presence of Norton. See MVP Bert Kinney's system restore
page for troubleshooting tips.

Norton home security products can be problematic. I don't recommend their
use. At best they are resource hogs, and sooner or later can cause a
variety of problems. There are other, less resource intensive, more
reliable programs, some of which are free.

Anti-Virus: Avast (free, which is what I use), AVG (free), NOD32 and
Kaspersky are excellent

Firewall (all free): Sunbelt Software Kerio Personal Firewall, Comodo
Personal Firewall, Zone Alarm; Anti-

Malware (all free): Ad-Aware SE Personal, SpyBot S&D, Windows Defender,
SuperAntiSpyware, BHO Demon, Spyware Blaster, HijackThis.
