Getting "Connections tray not responding" error. Why?

I get this error at least once a day on my work laptop.
I leave it on and docked between 8AM to 5PM and then
again between 6PM to 7 AM to keep current on email. I am
typically connected via VPN to my companies network
during this time. When it comes time to shut down so I
can go to and from work, I cannot just choose shutdown
and forget about it, for I get this error and must mind
the computer until it hits the "closing network
connections" pop-up. Any suggestions on how to rememdy
this issue?
