currently calc resides in accessories, I want to put it in the start menu, ie
just click start and the usual place for windows update is where I want to
put calc, how do I go about it. OOPS windows XP PRO svc pk2

Cut the shortcut from;
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Accessories

and paste it in;
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu

Here is how you can do it:
- Launch "My Computer".
- Navigate to c:\windows\system32.
- Right-click calc.exe, then click Copy.
- Navigate to c:\documents and settings\all users\start menu.
- Right-click anywhere where it's blank.
- Click "Paste Shortcut".

Open either MyComputer or Explorer.
Expand C:\Documents and settings\All Users
Expand Start Menu\Programs
Click once on Accessories to hilite it.
In the Right pane Right click on Calculator.
Click Cut in the popup menu.
Click once on Start Menu to hilite it.
Right click in the Right pane and click Paste in the popup menu.
Close out back to the desktop.

Right click on the calculator icon in accessories and then "pin" to the
start menu.

Nice one, lots to learn about XP!

You got lots of answers, many I never would have thought of.

In XP Home, if I click on Programs->Accessories->Caluculator, if just so
happens that the "start menu" pane is just to it's left, so I DRAG the
calculator icon, and DROP it into "start" menu.

When you right click an icon, the box that comes up starts with:

Open
Run As
Pin to start menu
.....

it's on my standard XP pro svc pk 2 menu, never noticed it before, nor did I
know what it meant

Thankyou Ayush, that explained why I didn't see it and why I never intend to again,
at least for XP.

That's not an option in any popup menu on any machine I have running
here. Is it language, OS, etc. specific or a reg hack that you know
of?

Simple answer, I don't care for the alternative look and I'd rather use the memory
for other things I do.
