Getting BSOD & continual re-booting

Hi,

I'm back with a new problem.

I had to re-fornat the C: drive, and then actually do a new install of
windows xp.
Then when that was all done I re-booted and went into bios to set the
hard drive
as the first boot device. Re-booted. Now nothing works. It tries to
start
Windows, and when the BSOD comes up, it goes by so fast I can't even
read it.
I've seen it enough times that I could pick out something about
"performing
physical dump of memory" but that's it.

I can't boot from the CD. If I boot from the boot disk I have on
floppy, I get
a DOS prompt for the A: drive, and am able to read what files are on
the
floppy. I can't change the drive, it is stuck on A: Does this mean
it's
likely a software problem?

Thanks!

Doesn't sound like a software issue.
Sounds more like an install gone badly wrong possibly due to hardware
issues.
Why exactly can't you boot from the CD? Go into the BIOS and set the CDROM
as the first boot device. Boot from the XP disk. Take it from there for your
recovery and repair options.

Yes, I have set the CD ROM as the first boot device, and disabled
all the others, and it doesn't do any good.

If I simply disconnect the hard drive completely so it would be forced
to look at the CD ROM, then it says "boot disk failure." But I just
used
it to install Windows xp on the C drive, and it worked
until I set the C drive as the first boot device.

What it sounds like is that you have made some changes to the BIOS that's
resulting in a non-operative system.

Have you gone into the BIOS and put all the settings back to default and
tried to boot to the CD this way? Or drained the BIOS settings with the
jumper and tried this?

The fact that you can boot from the floppy is a good sign. Does the BIOS
recognize the HDD you have installed? Which m/b make and model are we
talking about here?

The floppy disk is stuck on "A" because the hard disk is probably
formated NTFS and DOS cannot see it. If you change the boot order so
that the cd is at the top of the boot order you should be able to boot
with the cd again. To capture the bugcheck error message (BSOD) try
pressing F8 when the computer boots and go in the Advanced Boot options
and disable the "Automatically Reboot..." option.

Thanks, I tried it. Now it at least takes the time to read the CD
ROM.
Then I get "boot disk failure," and it sits there. Then I went back in
and set
the HD to be the first boot device, and the CD ROM as the second, and
was
right back at the BSOD and continual rebooting.

My m/b is the ASUS ncch-dl. I guess the bios does recognize the HDD
(when the HDD is set as the first boot device). because that is where
it's
trying to boot from.

I did set the CD ROM as the first boot device in the

It says: "boot disk failure." and now it sits there.

I tried the F8 thing and that didn't work. I didn't see any
"Automatically Reboot" option but I tried several, and
it always goes back to the continual re-booting
(when the HD is set as the first boot device that is).

Can it now boot from the CD?

Yes, and No. I tried something else - I put the
windows XP CD ROM in the DVD drive. It read it,
and started setup all right. It runs through copying
the files, doing the format, then tells me it's going to
re-boot, and that setup will continue after that.

The problem is, setup does not continue. Instead
it goes back to the beginning of the whole process.
So how can I get it to what it's supposed to do?

well now I think i get it. Windows setup thinks
the HD is damaged. So I've got a problem with
that and the CD ROM drive.
