I work for the University of Wis. -- Green Bay and we are upgrading to
Windows XP this summer. At the computer help desk, we currently use a
program called VNC to remotely connect to all of the computers here on
campus to assist with any problems that any user might have. We
currently have it set up so that when a user calls, they can tell us
their computer number, we can type that number in and have full
control of their computer. The problem with VNC is that it doesn't
refresh the screen very well like we would like it to, so we are
exploring other programs that will allow us to do the same thing.
Since remote desktop is built right in, we would like to use that
program. The problem we are running into is that everytime that we
would want to assist someone, we would have to send a request to give
us permission to log on to their computer, and then they would have to
grant us permission to have full control. I want to know if there is
a way to get around this log in feature so that we can just say which
computer we want to log on to, and log in and have full control. Main
reason being is that many times professors or other facutly members
would like us to work on a problem while they are not there so we
don't have to interfere with their work. Does anybody know of a way
to get around the log in or is that not possible? Any help
appreiciated.

Thanks
Grant

Remote Assitance is a good way of doing this. Also, check out the Command
line option called shadow.exe (its in windows\system32 directory). Its very
simple and easy to use. I can provide you more information about this if
you're interested.

Remember, you have to use this inside a remote desktop session and not from
the console directly.
