Getting Access and Excel to talk

K

KevinS

Background: We have a legacy app using Access 97 that every week we run a
query and export the info to Excel 2000 using the date as part of the
filename. At that point a couple of users will update the spreadsheet with
info from cases listed in the report. When I run the query again and export
the info to Excel it will have a new name since the date has changed. The
information entered in last weeks Excel sheet is untouched because of the
date in the filename. The users will then copy and paste from the old
document to the new document. The new report may not have ALL the records
from the last report.

Problem: My users would prefer to have one place to enter the data. Then
they would like that repository to transfer the information from last weeks
report into Excel to Access OR from Access to Excel.

There are two components: 1) Data entered into Access needs to be exported
to Excel. 2) Any updates to Excel needs to be put back into the Access 97
database.

Unfortunately, Access can no longer talk to Excel. Microsoft lost a lawsuit
a few years ago, and was forced to remove the ability to update Excel
directly from Access.

Can you tell me where I can find this information to show to my boss? He
feels that anything can be done if he can voice it.
Thanks.
