Even if a person tries to install it on a different OS it would give an
error message I believe.. so no real harm would be done. however you are
right about that more general link.

Or just use the Windows Update program.

Assuming you've only got one workstation to update, otherwise downloading
the administrative patch is a better idea so it can be distributed to lots
of workstations, e.g. via SMS, SUS, etc.

You're talking about any OS coming out of Redmond, of course. :)

those OS should be replaced not patched.

Well, you can't replace them if your hardware doesn't support XP. Some
of us still use older laptops as backups.

what kind of hardware cannot support xp?

I have installed XP on a pentium 90 with 64 mb ram.....

there are ways to make XP smaller, and lighter...

486DX50 on a laptop with 5 Megs (that can't be expanded). The serial
port still works, which is all I use it for, but running a
stripped-down version of Win later than 3.11 might be nice.

Ok here is the challenge:

If this was a desktop I would have you running win98SE in no time!

see here: http://www.litepc.com/98lite.html (this is not freeware however)

this can strip down windows 9x so that it will run fast on your laptop..
however there is a catch I am not sure you can avoid... unless the dos
installation
(see screenshot here http://www.litepc.com/screenshots.html) allows you to
do it.
The catch is that in order to install windows 95 you need 8 mb ram or if you
want to install 98 you need 16 mb ram or else the os does not continue.

There are some work around you can do with a normal pc...
1) you can temporarily install more ram so that windows can get pass the
"ram amount test" during the installation. Then you can remove it and it
will work, using the virtual memory.

2) you can remove the hard disk and place it onto a more modern computer,
and start the installation there... so that the ram barrier is passed.
Before the hardware detection is started during the installation of win9x
you remove the disk again and place it inside the old pc.. Windows is loaded
correctly with less ram.

These 2 options are of course only if 98lite does not allow you to overcome
the ram problem. You can email the developer and ask.
Or perhaps you can find a hack that lets you overcome the ram barrier during
installation

If you are worried that 5 megs are not enough for win9x, don't worry... lol
even if you have 16 megs or ram its still not enough.
You will use the virtual memory as ram. If you make the os liter, by
removing the unneeded components from the OS an you install lite programs
the computer will work well.

another solution I just thought of..

if you can place the hard disk of the laptop in an external 2.5 inch USB
case,
you can use vmware or another virtual machine program on a more powerfull
computer that has that USB external case connected, to make a lite win9x
installation, then make an IMAGE of that installation, and copy the Image to
your laptops hard drive that is in the external case. When you place the
drive inside the laptop and boot, win9x will look for all the drivers needed
for the new hardware.

It will work. It will not work well - unless you like to have a
reason to leave the room every 5 minutes.

I can connect the drive to an ATA connector in a desktop (There used
to be readily-available adapters for that). That still doesn't make
98 run well in 5 megs of RAM.
