Get ready for critical updates Feb. 8

H

History Fan

Got this info from Paul Thurrott's SuperSite for Windows:
http://www.windowsitpro.com/windows...rticleID/45323/windowspaulthurrott_45323.html

<<On February 8, Microsoft will ship fixes for a whopping 13 security flaws.
The software giant rates three of the flaws as critical, the company's
highest rating (the lowest rating is good and the highest rating is bad).
The company made the revelation through the Microsoft Security Bulletin
Advance Notification service, which preannounces the number of upcoming
patches that the company will release during its regularly scheduled monthly
patches. Nine of this month's flaws are in various Windows versions, and the
remaining four flaws involve Windows SharePoint Services (WSS), Microsoft
Office, the Windows .NET Framework, Visual Studio .NET, Windows Media Player
(WMP), and MSN Messenger. I hope you IT administrator types weren't planning
to take it easy next week.>>

Possible that we now must certify that our Windows XP versions are "Genuine"
as part of MS's new lock-out policy??

Dan

Do you know why Microsoft does not apply this lock-out policy to 98SE as
well?

Hi

No, but I can guess on the reasons:

1)
Much more difficult for MS to determine if the Win98 installation
is a genuine one.

2)
MS is not interested in using a lot of time creating and testing
new Windows Update controls for Win98.

I appreciate the feedback. Thank you for your comments. :>

If a person logs onto Microsoft's site while using win98 or 2000, will they
still be able to download stand-alone (network install) updates for WinXP?
Will stand-alone updates be eliminated altogether and everything be online?
If that's the case a lot of network administrators will be pissed (they have
to update hundreds of computers) won't they?

I often use WinME (because win98 crashes) for internet (I know it's less
secure than XP) because its not the resource hog that WinXP is on my slow
computer. So I often am downloading things for XP from my WinME internet
partition. But if Microsoft is going to require the person logging in to be
using WinXP at the time, then I can't download updates for WinXP. I know
about their corporate site.

XP will require validation. As of now, 98, 98SE or ME will not require
validation. However, Microsoft may change their mind and require 98, 98SE,
and ME to have validation at the end of 2005. As of now, all we know is in
the middle of 2005, XP will require validation of legal software for manual
downloads. Automatic downloads will still be available for everyone.
