Can Microsoft Outlook 2007 work in the background so it automaticly checks
for e-mails even though the main window is closed?

Sure, open Outlook, right click the Outlook icon in the Notification Area
and choose Hide When Minimized. Minimize Outlook.

No, the full Outlook program needs to be open to work.
